He may be too short and stocky according to NFL scouts. He may not take any snaps from under center. He's only run one offense in his life. And yes, he may occasionally sport the chin-strap beard look. No matter what criticism you levy against Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel, it's impossible to deny one fact - the kid is freaking good at what he does.
His numbers are mind-boggling to this point in the season and even as the competition heats up, there's no reason to think that he'll be cooling down. He currently sits 3rd in the nation in passing yards at 1,412, but has done so in 53 less attempts than the leader Texas Tech's Graham Harrell. Daniel's passer rating of 193.39 ranks 4th in the country and third in the Big 12 behind Sam Bradford (Okla) and Colt McCoy (Tex), but both Bradford and McCoy have achieved their ratings throwing the ball significantly less than Daniel (50 less attempts and roughly 600 less yards). He is completing passes at a clip of 75.9% and has just one interception compared to 12 touchdown passes.
Look at it this way, if he kept us this pace through the Big 12 Championship Game, Chase Daniel would end the 2008 season with 4,589 yards completing 325-429 attempts, 39 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Not a bad season.
With that type of performance through the first four games this season, it's not a surprise that Daniel has taken a strong hold atop the annual Heisman trophy rankings. The Heisman is largely an award that college football fans blow off unless someone that they follow is involved in the discussion. This year, Mizzou fans are intensly focused on the increasingly difficult schedule ahead, but also keeping one eye on the race for the bronze stiff arm.
As must criticism as the award receives throughout the sports world, it still remains a primary focal point throughout the college season. As a result, there are countless polls and rankings trying to handicap the race from Day 1.
Let's just say we're not the only ones developing a little sports man crush on Mr. Daniel. Here's a quick glance at some of things they're saying about Mizzou's golden boy...
"Missouri's Chase Daniel is Barack Obama. He has broken out of the pack with soaring statistics and tapped into a thirst for change." - David Whitley, Orlando Sentinel
"It seems like every week Mizzou's impish quarterback is setting some sort of record. If he can continue his hot streak, especially during Big 12 play, he'll be the guy to beat." - Graham Watson, ESPN.com (and former MU beat writer)
"Every week Daniel seems to do something to top himself." - Gene Menez, SI.com
“If Chase Daniel keeps putting up these numbers and Missouri keeps winning, he cannot be beat. We're only a month into the season and Daniel is already in the position Tebow was in about midway through last season: It's his trophy to lose.” - Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel
Hopefully we can survive this Saturday without him.
