With the news that Randy McMichael is out for the season, it's a safe conclusion to say the Rams free agent class of 2007 on the offensive side of the ball was a complete and utter failure. Let us count the ways.
-- The Rams opted to let Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald go and inked Drew Bennett in their stead for a six year, $30 million deal. As of this typing, Bennett's combined '07 and '08 numbers read as follows: 34 catches, 379 yards, 3 touchdowns, a long of 24 and an 11.4 average per catch. Not exactly number one or two receiver type numbers, even though Bennett's ugly salary would have us think otherwise.
-- Last season, Bennett's predecessors were infinitely better than him. Kevin Curtis finished with 77 catches, 1,110 yards, 6 TD, a long of 75 and a 14.4 average. And to the surprise of everyone not named Mike Martz, Shaun McDonald finished with 79 receptions, 943 yards, 6 TD, a long of 48 and an 11.9 average. Yes, Shaun McDonald, the #4 receiver for the Lions was a more valuable commodity than Drew Bennett -- and cheaper at that. (Curtis has yet to play this season after hernia surgery; McDonald is back to sub-standard levels with the absence of Mad Mike.)
-- The Rams also signed Randy McMichael to a three year deal prior to the '07 season. With the recent move to injured reserve, he'll finish his first two years with 50 catches, 568 yards, 3 TD, a long of 31 and a 12.6 average. To be fair to McMichael, he seemed to be on the verge of a productive season with Al Saunders as coordinator, but leg problems have put a damper on it.
-- Oh, and just for good measure, Isaac Bruce has more touchdowns through five games with the 49ers than Bennett does in his Rams career. Heading into Week 6, Bruce has 14 catches for 275 yards and 4 TD. And he's averaging 19.6 yards per receptions. Wonderful job, Rams. Get rid of the franchise cornerstone who can still play and keep an overpaid, injury-prone goofball.
At least the Rams signed Donnie Jones just before the 2007 draft. He's been the team MVP for the past two seasons. Hey, all is not lost on the free agent class. (!!!)
